Watching women suffer trauma to the breast concerned me greatly and I decided that we should research the relationship between trauma and breast cancer. At this time, 1975, I was a research technician at the University of Minnesota - Duluth at the medical school where I assisted in performing research on the relationship of asbestos fibers and herpes virus causing cancer. While at the University of Minnesota - Minneapolis in 1978, I contacted Dr. Lela June Stoner and she assisted me in conducting an international search and we could find no prior research or teachings in medical institutions regarding the association between breast trauma and breast cancer. We conducted our study and found conclusively that there was indeed an association between breast trauma and breast cancer. I then developed the breast protector. Regarding the requirements for breast protection, I believe these are the first rules put in place to prevent breast trauma in any sport. Several sports were identified where women were at risk for trauma and subsequently, breast cancer.
